On Profit-Maximizing Pricing for the Highway and Tollbooth Problems

چکیده
In the tollbooth problem, we are given a tree T = (V,E) with n edges, and a set of m customers, each of whom is interested in purchasing a path on the tree. Each customer has a fixed budget, and is willing to pay at most her budget to purchase her path. The objective of the problem is to price the edges of T such that the total revenue made by selling the paths to the customers that can afford them is maximized. An important special case of this problem, known as the highway problem, is when T is restricted to be a path. In this paper, we study the tollbooth and highway problems. For the tollbooth problem, we present a randomized O(log n)-approximation, improving on the current best O(logm)-approximation, since n can be assumed to be at most 3m. We also study a special case of the tollbooth problem, when all the paths that customers are interested in purchasing go towards a fixed root of T. In this case, we present an algorithm that returns a (1−ǫ)-approximation, for any ǫ > 0 and runs in quasi-polynomial time. Finally, we show that the highway problem that was earlier only known to be weakly NP-hard, is in fact strongly NP-hard.

Profit-maximizing pricing for tollbooths
The input to the tollbooth problem is a graph G = (V,E) and a set of m buyers Pi where each buyer is interested in buying a path Pi connecting si, ti ∈ V . Each buyer comes with a budget b(Pi), a positive real number. The problem is to set non-negative prices to the edges E of G. A buyer buys her path Pi if the sum of prices on Pi is at most her budget. If a buyer buys her path, we obtain a pro...

This study models a joint pricing, inventory, and preservation decision-making problem for deteriorating items subject to stochastic demand and promotional effort. The generalized price-dependent stochastic demand, time proportional deterioration, and partial backlogging rates are used to model the inventory system. The objective is to find the optimal pricing, replenishment, and preservation t...
متن کاملSelf-scheduling of EV aggregators in Energy market based on Time-of-Use Pricing
This paper presents a new solution for the self-planning task of private EV aggregators to realize higher profits in distribution networks. Since the model is proposed from the EV aggregator's viewpoint, the corresponding effects of the aggregator's profit-seeking approach on the grid such as the power losses and voltage levels might be unknown or even negative. To address this issue, a commerc...
متن کاملValid inequalities and branch-and-cut for the clique pricing problem
Motivated by an application in highway pricing, we consider the problem that consists in setting profit-maximizing tolls on a clique subset of a multicommodity transportation network. Following a proof that clique pricing is NP-hard, we propose strong valid inequalities, some of which define facets of the 2-commodity polyhedron. The numerical efficiency of these inequalities is assessed by embe...
متن کاملseeks to examine road pricing on a network of autonomous highway links with the goal of understanding the social welfare and equity implications of widespread adoption of road pricing and privatization
highway links. “Autonomous” refers to the links’ being competitive and independent and having the objective of maximizing their own profits without regard for either social welfare or the profits of other links. The principal goal of this research is to understand the implications of the adoption of road pricing and privatization on social welfare and the distribution of gains and losses. The s...
